“This could mean that up to 90% of Gaeltacht schools could be amalgamated or closed. In the Gaeltacht areas that is 26 schools from 41 in Galway, 21 out of 24 in Mayo, in Donegal 31 from 42, in Waterford 2 from 3, 13 out of 14 in Kerry and three out of six in Cork. IT’S NOT LIKE WE’VE RUINED THEIR CHANCES ENOUGH WITH A THREE-FOLD INCREASE IN FEES. LET’S MAKE SURE THEY CAN’T GET IN. PARTICULARLY THOSE PESKY WORKING-CLASS STUDENTS IN AREAS WHERE LESS FUNDS AND RESOURCES ARE GIVEN, ENSURING LESS OPPORTUNITY AND LESS ENCOURAGEMENT IN EDUCATION WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT IT. LET’S RUIN IT MORE BY TELLING YOU WHOSE BEST AND TELL SOCIETY WHICH STUDENTS ARE THE MOTHERFUCKING UNDERACHIEVERS. YAAAAAR UK POLICY.

Police and Catholic schools bid to break down barriers [Ireland]

Catholic schools in Northern Ireland are to be offered visits by the police in an attempt to overcome traditional barriers between them. It is hoped that the initiative will ultimately lead to more Catholic recruits joining the PSNI (‘Police Service of Nothern Ireland’)…

Traditionally, particularly during the Troubles, relations between young Catholics and police have been difficult in some areas of Northern Ireland.

The Patten initiative on policing reform was aimed at creating a service acceptable to all sections of the community and addressing religious imbalance by encouraging more Catholics to sign up.

It is understood that just over 100 schools in priority areas such as Fermanagh, Londonderry, north and west Belfast, and some parts of Tyrone will be targeted first.

It is expected there may be resistance to police visits in some areas but the Catholic council has told schools it fully backed a greater police presence in Catholic schools.

CCMS chief executive Jim Clarke described the visits as “a future-focussed initiative”.

Policing is part of the normalisation of society and what we have got to do in Northern Ireland is make the so-called abnormal, normal for us and this initiative is part of that,” he said.

Normalisation in an occupied territory is cancerous.
Everything about this initiative is pathetic.

Is túisce deoch ná scéal.: [Strathclyde, Scotland] Students stage sit-in fees protest

seanmacdiarmada:

Protesters are holding a sit-in at a university over plans to charge future students from across the UK £27,000 in tuition fees.

On Tuesday, the University of Strathclyde said its governing body had approved fees of £9,000 a year for students from England, Northern Ireland and Wales, capped at £27,000 for four-year courses, from the 2012/13 academic year.

The fees do not apply to Scottish-domiciled students.

A spokesman for the demonstrators said around 40 students had come from universities across Scotland, including Glasgow, Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian, Edinburgh and St Andrews, to stage the sit-in at Strathclyde in Glasgow.

It follows a similar occupation last week at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) after it announced its intention to introduce £36,000 fees for students from the rest of the UK (RUK), and a 36-hour occupation at the University of Edinburgh in September in protest against its decision to set RUK fees at the same level.

A spokesman for the protesters said: “The introduction of fees and continuing cuts are an attack on the values of free education that Scotland has always prided itself on, we will continue to fight cuts in education and fight wider Government austerity plans.

“Disruption will continue and escalate as long as universities continue to pass on Government cuts. The student movement did not end with the introduction of fees for English students, we will continue to fight and we will win.”

A spokeswoman for the University of Strathclyde said: “A small number of protesters are holding a sit-in in one of the university’s administration buildings. The impact is localised and the university is working to minimise disruption.”

Meanwhile, Edinburgh Napier University has announced that it has set fees of £6,500 a year for RUK students.

It means a full-time four-year honours degree at the university would cost students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland £26,000.

“Students who acquire large debts putting themselves through school are unlikely to think about changing society, Chomsky suggested. “When you trap people in a system of debt . they can’t afford the time to think.” Tuition fee increases are a “disciplinary technique,” and, by the time students graduate, they are not only loaded with debt, but have also internalized the “disciplinarian culture.” This makes them efficient components of the consumer economy.”— Noam Chomsky

Aaron Porter, you know that shitty former president of the NUS who shabbily opposed the £9,000 tuition fees? Well, he started his own consultancy firm and is charging £125 an hour to advise universities on "the challenges and opportunities" of reforms to education. Permission to RAGE: Granted.

Completely unsurprising, but still. He’s shown himself rightfully so to be the massive fucking gobshite we all knew he was.

Oh hey, lets have another ‘protest’.

Everyone shout….NOW!

Mexican wave, woooooooo!

STAY OFF THE ROAD.

FUCKERY

Confused as to the sarcasm above.

lol wait, is that…in support of Porter?

I was assuming it was sarcastic towards Porter, like his poor attempts at protests where he just gets people in one place and then makes them like… blow whistles and then go home or some shit. But when you turn round and do something like a roadblock or an occupation, he’s like OH GOD DON’T DO THAT, THAT’S VERY RADICAL. Am I wrong? :( How could anyone defend the lad?
